About

The Man

Arthur Badalian is a Los Angeles based architectural designer focusing on balancing innovative design, site specificity, and client’s needs, to craft creative tailored spaces. His vision and inspiration thrives on a spectrum of creativity; whether its movies, culture, photography, fashion, or music; these art forms influence a spatial conformity and exceed the basic foundation of being a designer. With his practical and technical skills, and being a true perfectionist with experience, his focus on driving from design intent to a complete compliant project is a reflection of his dedication to the industry with architectural bliss.

Blue Clay Spa

Blue Clay Spa
Team: Arthur Badalian | Ara Hovsepyan

The Blue Clay Spa invites you to spend a few leisurely days enjoying its expansive guest house and experience the healing qualities of Blue Cay. Its rammed-earth walls, also composed of clay, as well as sand and gravel, maintain the tranquility of its context while sustaining their thermally massive and durable properties known to last centuries. Accommodations, which include baths, therapy rooms, sauna and massage rooms, are surrounded by the green nature that Latvia is known for. A second roof connects the disjoined structures of guest house, spa, dining, and service quarters to maximize the comfort of traveling between during months of snow, while collecting solar energy and guiding rainwater into cisterns.

Cabin A

Cabin A
Team: Arthur Badalian | Ara Hovsepyan

We use the A-frame as it allows for the creation of an architectural form with fewer surfaces than usual, simplifying the construction process. This form contains a steep angle on either side, providing large surfaces ideal for solar panels that can be used differently for different locations, and that will shed snow and water. The cabin is lifted off of the ground to minimize its penetrating footprint. Either stairs or a ramp can be attached to the platform.

The interior provides flexible space, in which tables can rotate and create different combinations of floor plans. Hay is used between the wood ribs for its high insulation value and spatial quality. Cabin A provides sleeping areas for up to 10 people (six below, and four on the mezzanine), composting, a storage area, rainwater collection, a kitchen, and a fireplace for both interior warmth and cooking.

We plan for a crew of a few people, enthusiasts, to be able to camp out for approximately one week to assemble Cabin A without heavy equipment.

Pick-Up Pop-Up Produce Station

Pick-Up Pop-Up Produce Station

The Pick Up, Pop-Up Produce Station is a proposal to provide reliable access to fresh, affordable and healthful food to commuters and local residents adjacent to the 103rd Street / Watts Towers Blue Line Station. We propose to install a dismountable produce stand outside the station, adjacent to Metro property accessible from 103rd street. The produce stand will be packable, transportable and will transform into an active and engaging retail environment in its open position, accommodating daily selling of produce, as well as serving as a backdrop for special events. It will improve health through improving food access.

Las Virgenes - NWL Experience
Team: Arthur Badalian | Ara Hovsepyan
Design Leader: Clark Stevens

The RCDSMM (Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains) engaged Arthur Badalian and myself as drafting, 3d modeling, and rendering consultants for this small project known as the 'interpretive structure and landscape' of the property. Clark Stevens designed this 120 square foot structure with landscape architect Ron Durbin, who assisted in terrain concepts. The project was used as ab educational exhibit of Los Angeles County's Low Impact Development Standards (LIDs) and for fire safe building and landscape approaches. The site is located at the Los Angeles County Fire Department Forestry Unit property, at the border of Malibu and Calabasas.

The Color of Live Television

THE COLOR OF LIVE TELEVISION is my first exhibition, which is a little bit of an experiment, to see how augmented reality can effect physical space.

in neuromancer, william gibson described chiba JP as having a sky "the color of a dead television." the city was disconnected from the network, a filling station by the information super highway with no on-ramp. TCOLT is trying to do the opposite- it's trying to act as a bridge between the virtual and the physical.

augmented reality is the most significant step in creating this bridge. it's a technology that superimposes information over a live video image. the kind of information superimposed can vary from locational based information

augmented reality is the most significant step in creating this bridge- it's a technology superimposes information it over a live video image. the kind of information can vary, from locational based information (like reviews of a restaurant you happen to be outside of, places to work on your laptop, or the location where you parked your car) to reference based information that responds to markers that exist in physical space.

TCOLT will look at the second kind of augmented reality, and start to play around with these markers, how they are arranged, and how they start to effect spacial experiences. the experience of seeing something enhanced through a phone doesn't replace the physical experience, but how it augments it may be in more ways than just seeing the digital image. the physical construction of these markers will have a specific effect on the space they inhabit on its own, and the tension between the two layers of reality is what I'd like to explore.

Materials & Methods

This project, concentrated on the main elements of the Cartier’s properties, such as the layering of the glass, transparency, detailing, and reflection. By, the composition of the project, we investigated as much careful details as possible. By, incorporating glass in multiple layers and installing in different positions helped the project to establish the same qualities as found in the Cartier Foundation; that is reflection of its surrounding environment and from its self. The large sum of glass used in the project helps to create transparent building. After the completion of the model, it was evident that all of the factors were functional and corresponded as intended.

Growth Table

Growth Table
Marine plywood, Douglas fir, glass, rubber, drawing supplies

Growth Table is one of a series of objects and spaces modified from a variety of familiar types to sponsor specific activities for adults as well as children.
The Growth Table is activated when placed in a public space because children will impulsively and utterly un-self-consciously indulge in spontaneous mark-making when presented with a place to sit, a rightly-positioned surface, and colorful instruments with which to draw. Provided with spaces for people of all sizes, adults will eventually jump in and draw – perhaps acting on a virtually universal memory of thousands of hours of childhood art-making.

Architecture 50k

Architecture 50k
Team: Arthur Badalian | Ara Hovsepyan

Our site in Idaho gets very cold during the night and very hot on summer days. There is a micro-climate that directs the wind to the north, which we utilize by containing operable glass on the south that the dweller can open during the summer to guide wind through the building, as a passive cooling device. A stove that the dweller can use to cook may also be able to heat the space. Insulation is used to keep the heat inside. A book shelf on the north wall serves as a secondary insulator, along with firewood stacked on the outside.

The pallets are porous and must be covered to protect themselves and the interior space. The Homasote company produces a cellulose based fiber wall board that’s made from recycled paper. It’s durable enough to walk on, which makes it a suitable material to clad the flooring and cover the walls when transparency is not desired. Polycarbonate panels clad the pallets when transparency is necessary, and bubble wrap is used to insulate the wall. On the lower pallets on the south facade the cavities are filled with rocks to provide a thermal mass. Glass exposes the desired views and the north star to the inhabitant at night.

On the west and north facades, where the pallets are arranged with the slits vertically, the module can be used structurally; enough members run vertically to transfer the carried load. The pallets are doubled on these facades to thicken the structural walls. 2x4 lumber members cross brace the pallets. Simpson Strong-Tie connectors attach the cross bracing to the pallets and the pallets to each other. On the south and east, the pallet is a plug in (when the slits are arranged horizontally there aren’t enough vertical members to carry the load ). The primary structure of these walls is constructed of 2x4s used as a combination of studs and beams to support them as panels.

The FLOAT House is a new kind of house: a house that can sustain its own water and power needs; a house that can survive the floodwaters generated by a storm the size of Hurricane Katrina; and perhaps most importantly, a house that can be manufactured cheaply enough to function as low-income housing.
